FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

College Introduction

Established in June 2007, Government Arts College, Maninagar offers quality education to students in the Arts stream. The main purpose behind such a decision was that there was no government institution of higher learning in the area catering to the needs of the economically weaker sections of society. On 19th of June 2008, Shri Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, dedicated this institution to the great scholar Padamshree Keshavram Kashiram Shastri. The campus accommodates six other institutions in addition to the Arts college. Amongst other subjects (Gujarati, Sanskrit, English, Economics, Psychology) the college imparts education in Indian Culture/ Indology to educate the new generation about its cultural heritage. The college has taken tiny yet definite steps towards its enhancement and growth. In the year 2011, the museum ‘Smrutikaksha’ in memory of Shri Keshavram Kashiram Shastri was inaugurated by Hon. Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The college considers the museum to be Shastriji’s sanctorum and takes immense pride in being the custodian of his legacy. At the same time, the institution acknowledges its debt to the Shastri family for entrusting us with the responsibility of looking after his heirlooms so that his legacy may be passed on to future generations.
While academic accomplishments are the pillars of any institution of higher learning, the college is also responsible for the overall growth and all round development of the students. Our NCC girls’ wing shoulders the responsibility of instilling leadership qualities amongst our female students while an active Collegiate Women’s Development Cell guarantees an atmosphere on campus that helps girl students to learn and flourish. The Women’s Development Cell is an integral part of the college, working for a gender equal earth. The cell is committed to creating dialogues about issues surrounding gender, race, sexuality, prejudice and facilitating the formation of a safe environment within the community while sensitising boys towards gender equality and responsibility. The college also has an active NSS wing through which we nurture our students to contribute to society and ensure a better life for the less fortunate and needy. The NSS wing has aided in developing an attitude of caring and sharing so that the youth may know the importance of community living and thus aiding their holistic development. Our students have won laurels through several awards in youth festivals and national sports events under the able guidance of the teachers. ‘Rozgar Melas’, Career Counselling sessions are encouraged because one of the aims of higher education is employability and financial independence. A large campus that is neat and clean is inviting and conducive to learning. Large and well ventilated classrooms ensure that students have access. Staff and students work as a team towards making this institution a temple of learning.
